Root Canal
Root canal treatment is an excellent alternative to extraction, as it allows the tooth to be saved—maintaining function, preventing further damage, and helping to preserve your natural smile. It is typically needed when bacteria have entered the nerve (pulp) of the tooth, often due to deep decay or trauma.
Despite common misconceptions, root canal treatment is usually pain-free and feels very similar to having a regular filling. Your dentist at Glebe Hill Dental will ensure your treatment is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
During the procedure, once the tooth has been thoroughly anaesthetised, the inflamed or infected nerve tissue is removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned and disinfected to eliminate any bacteria. A temporary filling and medication may be placed to allow the tooth to settle.
At a follow-up appointment, the tooth’s root canals are permanently sealed to help prevent future infection. In many cases, a dental overlay/crown is recommended to strengthen the tooth and restore its long-term function. Your dentist will advise you if a crown or overlay is the best option for your individual situation.
